Yves’ Articles from Penfeathers

Updated: 11 Oct 2010

This is a collection of the articles I wrote for "Penfeathers", a quarterly periodical intended for young, literate readers. It consisted of a four-page insert in a monthly regional newsletter for an international educational organization. I was the editor from late 2005 to early 2008.

In said organization, the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA, Inc.), I like to say that we re-create the fun stuff from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. "Yves de Fortanier" is the persona name I use in the Society.

The links below go to plain text files.

December 2005
What is a Penfeather?, A Hunter and His Two Dogs, A Prideful Queen on Her Throne (the last two articles are about constellations and the stories of their origins)
March 2006
Packing List for an English Tournament Fighter (circa 1450)
June 2006
I Want To Be Tom! (first of a two-part article on games of tag); the games are Hoodman's Blind, Falcons and Mice, Barley Break, and Partner Tag
September 2006
I Want To Be Tom! (second of a two-part article on games of tag); the games are Everybody's Tom, Tom's Vineyard, and Wolf in the Henhouse

Is Your Last Name a Job? (a list of about 200 trade-based surnames and meanings)
March 2007
Ideas for Children's Activities (dress the fighters, loot the bodies, traveling traders, dress-up and beyond, tell a story); The Ant and the Grasshopper (a fable from Aesop re-told)
June 2007
The Man Who Lost His Hair (a fable from Aesop re-told); Let's Play Bocce

(There were two other issues published in 2007, but I didn't write the articles in either of them.)
