Using a table format to run a list,
example 1

We start with eight fighters in a double-elimination list.
We should have no more than (2x8)-1 = 15 fights total.

Here's the basic layout. Ftr stands for "Fighter".

Ftr Round
        1

 1
 2
 3
 4

 5
 6
 7
 8

ROUND ONE

Pair up the fighters by halves: #1 vs #5, #2 vs #6 and so on and assign bouts as follows:

Ftr Round
        1

 1 5/
 2 6/
 3 7/
 4 8/

 5 1/
 6 2/
 7 3/
 8 4/

The bouts are announced and fought.

For these examples, the results are randomized. Let's say Fighter #5 wins the first bout. Write the results in the grid.

Fighter #5 won the bout against Fighter #1, so on the row for #5 for this round we put a "W" for a win. On the row for #1 for this round, who fought #5, we put an "L" for a loss.

The results of the other bouts (with Fighters #2, #7, and #8 as winners) are recorded similarly:

Ftr Round
        1

 1 5/L
 2 6/W
 3 7/L
 4 8/L

 5 1/W
 6 2/L
 7 3/W
 8 4/W

This is a double-elimination list, so all of the fighters are still in the list. This will change in later rounds.

ROUND TWO

To assign the bouts after the first round, I like to pair up winners with winners and losers with losers based only on the results of the previous round, alternating the bouts.

In the previous round, the bouts (with winners listed first) were: #5-#1, #2-#6, #7-#3, #8-#4. So, the bouts I'd assign for this round would be:

#5 vs #2, #1 vs #6, #7 vs #8, #3 vs #4.

The randomized results: #5, #6, #8, and #3 win their bouts.

Ftr Round Round
        1 2

 1 5/L 6/L
 2 6/W 5/L
 3 7/L 4/W
 4 8/L 3/L

 5 1/W 2/W
 6 2/L 1/W
 7 3/W 8/L
 8 4/W 7/W

Since this is double-elimination, we check which fighters have lost in both rounds: they're out of the list.

In this case, that's #1 and #4. I like to write "out" in those rows in the next round to remind me not to put them in any more bouts in this tourney.

Ftr Round Round Round
        1 2 3

 1 5/L 6/L out
 2 6/W 5/L
 3 7/L 4/W
 4 8/L 3/L out

ROUND THREE

The bouts in the previous round, listing winners first AND dropping the fighters that are now out were: #5-#2, #6, #8-#7, #3.

Assign bouts as before: #5 vs #6, #2 vs #7, #8 vs #3.

None of the particular pairings have been assigned before in this list, so we're good to go.

The randomized results: #6, #2, and #8 win.

Ftr Round Round Round
        1 2 3

 1 5/L 6/L out
 2 6/W 5/L 7/W
 3 7/L 4/W 8/L
 4 8/L 3/L out

 5 1/W 2/W 6/L
 6 2/L 1/W 5/W
 7 3/W 8/L 2/L
 8 4/W 7/W 3/W

Fighters #3 and #7 are now out of the list with two losses each.

ROUND FOUR

The bouts from the previous round, winners first AND remaining fighters only: #6-#5, #2, #8.

We're down to four fighters, #6 was the winner of the first bout of the previous round, so let's see who #6 hasn't fought yet. #8. So, they fight.

#2 and #5 fight each other again like they did in Round Two.

(We could just as easily put #6 vs #2, which was done in Round One; and put #5 vs #8, picking which fighters to have face each other again is just one of those command decisions that you get to make. Marshals who know the fighters involved may be able to advise you to make a good choice.)

The randomized results: #8 and #5 win.

Ftr Round Round Round Round
        1 2 3 4

 1 5/L 6/L out
 2 6/W 5/L 7/W 5/L
 3 7/L 4/W 8/L out
 4 8/L 3/L out

 5 1/W 2/W 6/L 2/W
 6 2/L 1/W 5/W 6/L
 7 3/W 8/L 2/L out
 8 4/W 7/W 3/W 8/W

#2 and #6 are now out with two losses.

ROUND FIVE

There are but two fighters left (#8, #5), so it's the final round. Whoever wins, wins the list.

The final round could be run as a best two out of three bouts.
Fighter #5 has a record of 3-1, Fighter #8 has no losses.

The loss could carry over to the final round, or not. If so, #8 would have to win only one bout, #5 would have to win two in a row.
