Baron Borgar and Baroness Lourene do send greetings and a warm invitation to join them and indulge in the hospitality of the South Downs in a winter celebration of the arts. All are invited to join in this faire of the arts as we celebrate the talents of Meridies’ beloved populace.
All good gentles are invited to bring their projects to share with the populace. No judging is scheduled. Instead, all are encouraged to bring their entries and stand beside them in the hall as the populace make their rounds. Entrants and populace are encouraged to engage in open discussion in an informal setting. Entrants can share their thoughts about their projects to passers-by as a class or just informal discussion. There will be organized classes for the populace as well.
Pictures from the event on the A&S Web site for Meridies.
An incomplete overview of the Faire entries
Lord Rhydderch (South Downs) - Period fishing display. Poles, lines in several colors made from horsehair, metal hooks, metal weights... and he made ALL of it by hand. Wall chart of sources and related info.*
Mistress Marsali (Iron Mountain) and Mistress Stephanie (Glaedenfeld) - SCA scrolls for royalty and peerages. Big, very fancy and colorful - and one by Stephanie was on an actual hide.
Lady Peryn (South Downs) & Lady Svana (Vulpine Reach) - Barding. Items and pictures of heraldic attire for horses from Peryn. Reproduction of Roman leather items from Svana. You know, all that leather stuff that goes on a horse.
Lady Ella (South Downs) - Medieval woman's sewing kit, Ximena's bone laurel wreath and other carved bone items, including buckles. Research paper "Exploration and Exploitation: The Portuguese in West Africa."
HL Temair (South Downs) - Medieval humours (foods and temperaments). One could also take a written quiz to help determine one's balance between the humours. She also had a wall chart of information. *
* One could say that Rhydderch and Temair "Excelled" in their presentation of information... ;-)
HL Rebecca (Northover, Gleann Abhann) - Recreations of period illuminations involving greyhounds (what else?) ... and several works of pysanky (traditional Ukrainian form of egg dyeing).
HL Julia (Vulpine Reach) - Reproductions of period religious icons (paint on wood). Also a greatbook that holds her history of A&S and service activity.
Lady Flannait (Beau Fort) - Elizabethan costuming display, including one complete outfit from the ankles up.
Lord Andrew (South Downs) - Period fencing. Seriously! A section of wooden fence, about 4x3' and the accompanying research.
And other displays there were, but I didn't wander through until late in the day.
Did you notice that I didn't use any comparative adjectives? The value would be lost quickly. One cannot repeat terms like awesome, fabulous, or terrific and and have them retain their punch... If you didn't see it, you missed a lot of Truly Way Cool stuff.
| 8-10 am | Dispelling Myths About Gold Thread EmbroideryInstructor: HRH Lethrenn This class is a discussion on how gold thread embroidery manufactured and used in period. There will be instruction on embroidering with gold thread, as well as discussion of some period pieces. |

Lord Guillaume des Pyrénées will bring wide a variety of games. Come and compete in contests of strategy, luck, and skill.

Lady Seonaid inghean William will keep our youth happy and smiling.
Sir Morgan Ironheart is in charge. One of the activities will be the ...
Each participating fighter will present a performance of some sort (singing, poetry reading, dramatic reading, story telling, dancing, etc.) to be judged by our panel. The fighter will receive one to five ribbons, depending on the quality of the performance. Each ribbon signifies a life in the tourney. Win a fight, advance. Lose a fight, hand in a ribbon. Ribbons are not transferable to other fighters.
After that, there will be melees and pick-up fighting.
Lord Conchobar (Sol Haven) won the tourney. The judges were generous - no fighter was given less than three ribbons!
There was also some impromptu pick-up fencing on site.
The cabins are heated. There are PLENTY of beds remaining.
Abundant space for tenting on site is also available.
Brunhilda is sponsoring a Magic Helmet crest contest. Documentation - not required! Wearability - not required! Prizes awarded. Click on link above for more information, opens in a new browser window.
Of the five entries, two were recognized just before dessert was served. Mistress Christianna strode the length of the hall to high table in horned helmet and "augmented" breastplate singing with vigor. She announced for Brunhilda, with a straight face, that she had two prizes... (wink)
Lady Patrice de Arlie (Forth Castle) received a set of Italian feastware and Lady Racheal MacFinney (South Downs) received a German boardgame made by Lord Rhydderch.
A fabulous German feast by the uber-talented Brunhilda der Koch that you simply won’t want to miss is planned to delight up to 100 guests. E-mail: vox8 /at/ mindspring.com
Never heard of Brunhilda? Don't worry, Signora Serena will be hanging around the kitchen too... 8-)
FEAST MENU (opens in a new browser window)
Seats left: zero ... as of 9 Feb 2005.
During the feast, Lady Eorann sang and Christianna was (I think) the Royal Carver. Eorann, Andrew, Peryn and Rhydderch also performed what's become known as the "happy-slappy" dance (it's a German folk dance for four people).
Near the end of feast, the head cook was called forth. And those of us in the hall applauded her efforts.
King Ailgheanan complimented the kuchinherrin: "Oh, Brunhilda, you're so lovely..." ♫
She responded in the appropriate manner: "Yes, I know it, I can't help it..." ♫
To all: You are invited to celebrate the night away at Mistress Christianna MacGrain's Birthday Ceilidh! It's a party where you bring the music and fun. (Some fun will be provided.) So grab your instrument, a good story to tell, and your favorite drink – and come to the Craft Cabin after feast.
The entertainment featured singing by the South Downs Choristers and Lady Madelena and stories by Master William MacNaughton (Thor's Mountain).

It doesn't happen very often at a SD event, but there was no dancing after the feast. Neither was there a hafla. The people who usually run dancing were worn out (from the Faire and/or helping in the kitchen) and the people who usually run haflas didn't stay for feast. Of course, people still had a fine time chatting in the cabins and at the Birthday Ceilidh.
