The Barony of the South Downs

held its

Twelfth Night Celebration
and
Red
& Green Color Court

at the Ron Anderson Community Center
in Powder Springs

on January 13, AS xxxv (2001)

The tentative schedule of events was as follows:

Heraldic Coloring Contest beginning at 2:30 PM
Processional Court at 4:30 PM
Feast and Revel
Clean-up and then leave by 11:00 PM

* * * Take note: this site is BONE DRY * * *

There wasn't a coloring contest, per se,
as I didn't arrive with the books until after 4!

The procession did happen - later than planned...

More information on the feast and revel below...

There's a happy ending: we got done on time and there were no injuries
despite having both a Tangle Bransle with two rival lines
and a Bells & Pillows tourney;
now if there was a game of Clench A Wench...
well, things just might have been different!

DIRECTIONS TO THE SITE
Take I-20 West, past Six Flags.
Exit on Thornton Road and go right onto Thornton Road.
Travel about seven (7) miles on Thornton Road.
Make a right onto Brownsville Road.
Brownsville Road will "T" into Marietta Street.
Make a right onto Marietta Street.
Make a left onto New Macland.
Make a right onto Macedonia.
Make a left into Wild Horse Creek Park.
The Ron Anderson Community Center building will be directly in front of you.

Bring your crayons, colored pencils or markers
We will have an Amusement in the form of an Heraldic Coloring Book for one and all. Anyone may take up the challenge and may get help from anyone else on site.

Reflecting the individuality of the Barony populace, the content on many of the pages in said "coloring book" were placed at varying amounts of space from the top of the page (read: the copy center messed up and I ran out of time, but they did give me a "huge" discount).

"Oh, whatever shall I wear?"
You are invited to wear Red & Green. Or Green. Or Red. We will applaud the most thematic garb. Prizes will be awarded for the most favored:

Carol Jane provided the many prizes!

Please see Lady Carol Jane or the Honorable Lady Æthelthryth for advice on constructing garb for your persona.

"I would like to be announced in for the Processional"
The Baronial Court will open at 4:30 PM with a full reverse procession. Please contact the Baronial Pursuivant, the Honorable Lord Martin, to confirm your place in the order of precedence and any awards that you have received that you would like announced.

"Oh, whatever shall I bring to eat?"
The barony is providing roasted meat and meat pies prepared by the skilled hands of Mistress Rhiannon and her talented cohorts. The rest of us may contribute to the feast as follows:

English, Italian or German, please bring a vegetable or fruit dish
French, Spanish or Norse, please bring a dessert
Middle Eastern, Slavic or Celtic (yes, Conmaol, this does include Irish) please bring a starch
Everyone else, please bring cheese or hors d'oeuvres

Mistress Rhiannon couldn't attend the occasion, and she was missed along with many other members who could not be present. The feast was GOOD - as usual, we had an embarrassment of riches! Not to mention an abundance of good food...

Evening activities
The feast will begin with the Boar's Head being sung into court.
Through the evening we'll have dancing and singing ... and more dancing and singing.
Also, Mistress Rhiannon will defend her title in BELLS AND PILLOWS!

The Choristers sang in the Boar's Head and sang other songs, including a few that the populace jonied in on, in between performance dances led by Lady Peryn and Lord Rhydderch. There was a Bells and Pillows impromptu tourney that featured Lord Stephen, Baroness Kate and Lord Seric all doing well.

Santa Claus made an appearance and gave out gifts to the children!

The dancing which would normally last into the wee hours had many fewer dances than usual. Notably, the Tangle Bransle featured two rival lines led by Master William and Lord Stephen! (As noted above, no injuries took place.)

Make your banners available for decorating the hall
If you have banners for the hall, please bring them to Mistress Æthelwynn at the baronial meeting just prior to the event so that the decorating team may put them up for display. They will be returned to you after the event.

There were banners. A few of them went waaaay back in time...

One last thing... absolutely no alcohol.
Please remember, this is a bone dry site. Really, don't bring any. We could be shut down if a security guard came by and found alcohol present.
