The Barony of the South Downs presents
Early Spring Arts & Sciences Faire
|
|
This year we're doing Midwinter A+S a little differently.
This year it will be a one-day event held entirely on
Saturday, March 31, 2001... in the Year 35 of the Society.
The location will be the barony's regular meeting place:
the Georgia-Hill Neighborhood Facility at 250 Georgia
Avenue SE, Atlanta GA 30312
The Barony is throwing open its hearts and homes to its
many friends. Lord Yves (also the author of this Web site) is serving in the role of hosteller,
coordinating accommodations for our guests travelling from afar.
NOTE: The new
rules for Kingdom A+S will be introduced and used at this event.
[Removed form that allowed you to be sent email
whenever this page is updated.]

How to register online: see "Advance entry registration" at the top of this

On both Saturday and Sunday, bag lunches will be for sale to benefit Seasons,

blanket for a picnic lunch, this is a pretty site." For those inclined to dine or munch
elsewhere, directions to local eateries will also be available.
Armor repair workshop on Saturday
Want to learn how to fix armor? Sir Saavogg Haraldsson will coordinate a workshop on
armor repair during the day.
Fabric store tour: Saturday only
Want to find some great fabric for garb? A local guide will lead people to Forsyth
Fabrics and Lewis Textiles at 10:30 on Saturday. If sufficient
people are around on Sunday, there is a possibility of another tour then.
Feast
Limit: 75. Remaining: no more than 13.
Quoth the head cook, Herr Ludwig:
Most of it I am taking from "Food and Drink in Medieval Poland" by Maria Dembinska.
It is all period recipes. Here is our plan:
First Remove
Bread and fresh vegetables
Trencher bread (the real thing)
Beer Soup with Cheese & Eggs
Hashmeat in the Cypriot style served as meatpies
Second Remove
Composite of Cabbage, Chard, Dill & Mushrooms
Cheese Dumplings
Game stewed with Sauerkraut
A Court dish of Baked Fruit*
Third Remove
Pears stewed with Cucumber & Figs
Ham stewed with Cucumber
Baked Onions
Saffron Wafers
* I will also make this dish with a sugar-water (base) instead of the boiling milk and
lemon for those with lactose and citric acid allergies.
Cook's tour on Sunday
The renowned Mistress Christianna MacGrain (link removed) will be conducting a tour of
several farmer's markets and natural food stores.
Regional fighter practice on Sunday
The local marshal, Lord Michael of River's Bend (link removed) will be
the host of said practice. Considering it'll be held on April 1, you'd be a FOOL not to be here!
[haw haw haw...] Generally things get going here before noon, people
staying in town don't have to worry about getting up all that early.
Youth Combat too, as noted at the top of this page.
Regional fencing/rapier practice on Sunday
Contact Mistress Irene (link removed) for more information. We may have
an indoor site in case of rain...
Directions to the site
If I learn that there is a game in town the day of the event, I'll provide alternate directions
to help you get around the game traffic. You probably won't need it, but you may want to bring
a map of intown Atlanta.
From the north or the south: take your best route into Atlanta to reach I-75/85.
From the east or the west: take your best route into Atlanta. I-20, right?
From the north:
There may be some road work on I-75 and I-85.
Here is a link to the Georgia DOT site (dead link removed) for more information on road and bridge construction projects. I-75 and I-85 will connect just north of downtown Atlanta.
Go through downtown on I-75/85, under a few bridges and around
a BIG curve next to a big hospital.
You're going to take the first exit AFTER I-20.
The two right lanes will exit for I-20.
Stay near the right side, preferably in the third lane from the right
and don't get on I-20.
{ If you end up exiting anyway, bear LEFT instead of right,
and see the directions below for coming in from the west. }
Take exit 246 for Fulton Street (it's the next one after I-20).
At the light at the end of the ramp, turn left.
Go past two more lights and a LARGE parking area on your right.
** You'll pass some townhouses.
At the fork, bear right. At the stop sign, turn right onto Hill Street.
At the stop sign, you'll pass a school on the right.
Before the traffic light, see the large parking lot on the right,
park there and look for SCA folks.
From the south:
There may be some road work on I-75.
Here is a link to the Georgia DOT site (dead link removed) for more
information on road and bridge construction projects.
From I-75/85, take exit 246 for Capitol Avenue.
Turn right at the light for Fulton Street. Go past another light.
Continue at ** in the directions above.
From the east:
Take I-20 into Atlanta. Take exit 58B for Hill Street.
Turn left at the top of the ramp. Go past a light and a stop sign.
At the next stop sign, you'll see a school on the right.
Before the traffic light, see the large parking lot on the right,
park there and look for SCA folks.
From the west:
[This isn't the quickest route, but it's the easiest.]
Take I-20 into Atlanta. Go past the exit for I-75/85.
Take exit 60B for Moreland Avenue (northbound).
You'll loop around - stay in that lane to get back on I-20
going the other way (west, back the way you came).
Follow directions above for coming from the east!
Note: going home, you may want to go the same way,
looping back around at the Moreland exit.
Note: Moreland is where most of the nearby food places are.
If you're eating on site, you could do the turn around at exit 59.
Crash space - staying in town overnight
In the role of Hosteller, I have been called upon to coordinate accommodations for our guests
travelling from afar. If you would like crash space only for Saturday night, no problem.
I'm here to help.
If you're making your own arrangements to stay with somone in the Barony, please send me
email or call me so that I then have a better idea of how many visitors are staying in town
overnight.
If you would like for me to arrange crash space for your party, first send
in your reservation to Lethrenn.
I really think it's easier all around (especially for Lethrenn, since I'm asking for
a lot of detailed information) if you just contact me for crash space.
To help me find suitable crash space for you, I'll want your answers to the following questions:
- how many vehicles are in your party?
- does anyone in your party have trouble with stairs or hills?
- sleeping arrangements for your party: numbers of children, couples, and singles
- does anyone in your party require a soft place to sleep or is floor
space acceptable?
(if you can bring your own bedding and crash on the floor, it'll save the softer crash space
for others who require it)
- is anyone in your party allergic to dogs or cats? (especially cats! we have lots
of cats...)
- does anyone in your party smoke or use chewing tobacco?
- is anyone in your party allergic to smoke?
- what kind of people would you like to crash with
|
If you would like to crash with someone you don't yet know, but you'd like to have something
in common with them, let me know. The more you let me know, the better "matchmaking"
I can do.
However, you could send this information in with your reservation to Lethrenn and I can get
it from her. If you do this, please send her your email (and/or phone number) as well so I
can contact you regarding your crash space arrangements.
People who have crash space thus far: about 14.
Notes:
Bed space is counted like this: One-person bed = 1 space. Two-person bed = 2 spaces.
Most of us live on the NE side of town, typically 20-40 minutes from the site.
We have places and spaces for families, couples, singles, smokers, non-smokers, etc.
Finally, if getting crash space isn't your style, no problem!
There are MANY hotels in town - for every budget.
