The Year 1994, part 3: Summer |
Updated: 9 Feb 2003 |
This is a sketchy look at the modern year 1994 in the Barony of the South Downs (the SCA group based in Atlanta, Georgia).
This page is Part 3 – Summer. See Part 1 – Winter for the introduction.
July 6, Summer Court
Heavy rains basically made Macon into an island. Mistress Christianna organized runs to take bottled water to SCA folks there when the roads were opened.
Many people at Court. Some hadn't been seen in a while (Gershon & Galatea, Catrianna). Also a couple of newcomers.
Upcoming demos at DragonCon (Jul 16, fighting) and Georgia World Congress Center (Jul 22, fighting, singing, dancing).
Schtick by Galatea: she ran up and got Baron John's autograph next to his picture in the Museum Replicas catalog.
Motto contest winner: Master Cathal with ARX SEMPER .. "The Tower Forever".
Atenveldt Historian seeking history of groups (including SD) while Meridies was still in Atenveldt.
July 20
During the previous week people from the South Downs and other SCA groups in Georgia helped with supplies for flood victims around Macon.
About 25 showed up for the demo at DragonCon.
{I think William the Finn was there visiting. An early SD member who had since moved
away.}
Rendezvous for GWCC demo around 6:30 at Mistress Christianna's. Tentative demo schedule: Fighting, solo dancing by Jade, two other group dances, Singing {didn't happen, too noisy}, more fighting.
The next Academy Heraldicum will be in November.
{During late July through late August, Barony gatherings like many across the kingdoms in the central and eastern US are a lot smaller as people get ready for Pennsic, go to Pennsic, return from Pennsic, and recover from Pennsic.}
September 7
Attendance: about 45.
Historian (me) reported interviewing Saher Faux (of Thor's Mountain) at Tourney of the Foxes and Eric of Telemark and Brigit of Loch Ri at Grifphon's Pleasure on early SD / Meridies history. Thanked HL Victoria for recent delivery of many SCA periodicals for historian's office.
Upcoming nearby events: Coronation, Red Tower, Magna Faire, Danelaw, demo at St. Bartholomew's Church, Crown List.
Katerina is now clan chief of Cabal Mohr. Renaissance Riding Club (CM members) has a new site closer to Atlanta. Newsletter is called The Destrier.
Red Tower has 95 reservations. There will be traveller's fare Friday night. Red Ravens set up hall for feast Saturday. House MacLeod: feast cleanup. Novus Matisco: Sunday cleanup.
Ladies to meet after regular meeting.
Chatelaine introduced three new folks. Fighter Handbooks are for sale.
Chronicler (Christina) wants to step down – no time, no computer.
Provost (Adrian) has returned to health. His deputy Deirdre now has a night job. So he's looking for a new deputy and (as always) new classes.
Brian Hill: announced a demo at new small fraternity (with a literary basis) rush at Georgia Tech.
{This happened on Monday, 9/19. Sadly, little came of it.}
Marshal (Baron Simon): Armor inspection will start at 9 am at Red Tower. Fighting, 10 am. Planning for four tourney rings.
Victoria: Academy Heraldicum is scheduled to restart on the 2nd Monday of November.
Theodoric asked everyone to bring pillows to Red Tower for "Paradise".
September 21
Attendance: about 40.
Red Tower is this weekend. Staff meeting after regular meeting.
